PERSEUS
PERSEUS
--------------------------------------------------------
We will cover the topic of Perseus today. He has a lot of battles to elaborate on today. The first news topic today is Percy’s battle with the Gorgon! The Gorgon is Medusa, I’m sure most of you watching this have heard of her. She is rather secluded but she has caused disturbances in the community before. Medusa used to be a young, beautiful maiden before Athena caught her kissing the famed Poseidon. She got angry that they were doing this in her temple. Her jealousy overcame her and she turned her into a monster that turned anyone she looked at into stone. She had evil snakes for her hair! Athena didn't kill her then and she wanted Perseus to kill Medusa for her. We go to Athena now to see how she feels. “I am enraged with Medusa. How did she know I would----.” I’m sorry we lost her, now for the story with Neville. Thanks Dianne, now the story of Percy’s battle with the gorgon Medusa!
------****------
Perseus went to Athena to find specifics on what he should do with Medusa’s remains. Athena told him that she wanted the head and the head only to decorate her shield and so anyone in battle with her would know her power and the power of the Gorgon’s stare. “Where should I find the horrid Medusa at this time?” “Ask the Gray Sisters, they will tell you what you need to know if you appeal to them. “Where do I find these Gray Sisters?” “Ask the one who holds up the heavens, his name, I believe, is Atlas. “Where is Atlas?” “That is a simple question, he resides at the western edge of the world!” Before letting Perseus leave Athena offered him a mirrored shield that he was to use against Medusa because in myths you can look at her reflection and not turn to stone. Then Percy set out to kill the Gorgon.
------****------
Atlas was his first stop and he only begrudgingly pointed out a nearby cave. Seeing the Gray Sisters was not what the hero expected in the myths they were beautiful maidens only lacking eyes. What perseus saw was the old hag version of them. They told him to go see the water nymphs that were deeper in the cave. Percy actually found the nymphs in the underworld bathing in the river Styxs. The nymphs gave him the helmet of invisibility, winged sandals, and a carrying pouch. Then Hermes gave him a sickle. He would use these weapons to kill Medusa.
------****------
Percy lunges left and then right in Medusa’s lair! One blow of his sword and her head came clean off. The only mistake he made was when going back to give Athena her prize some men caught him and threw him a banquet. He went to show off his prize and you know what that will do, everyone in the room turned to stone and that ended his epic journey! That’s all folks, back to you Dianne.
